LISTENING AS A LIFESTYLE
FAQS
What do you mean by Trauma?
Trauma is a word that is being thrown around a lot in the healing world. Luis Mojica, a somatic & nutrition educator, explains it like this: "Trauma is NOT about the event, It's how the event is still living inside of your body now." The emphasis is how our body responds to any event. It's not about trying to relive or categorize the event that sparked the trauma inside of us. We want to learn to accept however our body responds to any perceived threat. Once we accept that this is how my body responds without judging the reaction, we can then learn to let it pass through you not getting stuck.
Is trauma release really for me if I don't have a history of Trauma?
Yes, when we hear the word trauma we can think of 2 categories: Big 'T' Trauma, and little t trauma. Big 'T' Trauma are those big events such as abuse, war, natural disasters, major medical need etc.
The little 't' traumas is the trauma we encounter by living in the world. Our bodies are sensing potential threat all around us. An email about losing your job, getting cut off in traffic, relationship strain, or even a loud noise when you're walking at night can all elicit a 'danger' response in our bodies. When we keep that activation inside of us it creates trauma that is stored.
How is this different from Talk Therapy?
Body based therapy is a focus on the body and the sensations and feelings within. Sometimes thoughts and stories come up during a session, when this happens I will encourage you to notice them, and notice how it feels in the body. I am not a licensed talk therapist so we will not be exploring the stories of where any particular feeling is coming from. Rather I will help you build resilience to be able to feel what you need to feel safely.
What is a session actually like?
We will start a session with chatting, talking about the nervous system and learning how to identify what we feel in accordance to our own nervous system. We will then do some grounding practices which are tools for you to learn to bring yourself back to the here and now when we become activated. Next we do some light stretches that will start to create a little bit of tension in the hips. We will then start to release that tension in a hands free method called TRE. Finally, we will have some time to check in with what we learned and get ready to go back into the world .
Each session ranges between 50 minutes and 1 hour and 15 minutes. Group size, and the client's familiarity of TRE are variables that may determine the length of a session.
How can I prepare for a session?
Please wear clothing that you feel comfortable in and that you can do light stretches in. I recommend light, loose clothing. (You will be laying on your back with your knees up) If the session is at your house, please prepare a place to lie flat on the floor. A yoga mat will work great. When you sign up I will send you an infographic to remind you of how to prepare.
